Learning Comes to Life in Land Based Studies
Our school woodlands are becoming a vibrant outdoor classroom, offering pupils valuable hands-on experiences through their Land Based Studies lessons.
Following a thorough tool induction, one of our Year 11 pupils has already begun working in the woodland area, helping to shape and maintain the space. This practical work is not just about improving the environment – it’s about developing real-world skills that pupils can carry into future education and employment.
Over the next two weeks, more pupils will take part in carefully planned activities such as selective mowing, where they will learn to balance land management with protecting local flora and fauna. These experiences encourage pupils to think critically about sustainability and the impact of their actions on the natural environment.
Through this project, pupils are building key skills including:
- Safe and confident use of tools and equipment.
- Following instructions and working independently.
- Identifying plants and understanding local wildlife habitats.
- Developing an awareness of environmental responsibility.
- Maintaining outdoor spaces for the benefit of the whole school community.
Land Based Studies gives pupils the chance to learn beyond the classroom, building confidence, independence, and practical knowledge in a meaningful and engaging way. It’s a fantastic example of how hands-on learning can inspire pupils while supporting and enhancing our local environment.
