INTRODUCING OUR SLT TEAM…

Woodlands Academy has a new Senior Leadership Team. Led by Headteacher Carl Smith, the team are excited for the future and wanted to introduce themselves properly.

CARL SMITH - HEADTEACHER

Carl is both delighted and excited to have the opportunity to lead the new team at Woodlands Academy. Carl brings with him 30 years of experience in education, including leading an Outstanding SEMH school.

Carl has dedicated much of his career towards raising standards and championing for what he believes is possible and achievable for the pupils in his care.

Part of the new approach at Woodlands will be the reintroduction of a points-based system that will support pupils recognising and managing their own behaviour and learning.
CHRIS ROLLINGS - ATTENDANCE LEAD

Chris has over 10years experience in special educational needs teaching and learning, specifically SEMH. Chris’s specialist field is mathematics and he has been at Woodlands for over 2 years.

Now as part of the Senior Leadership Team, Chris is enjoying working with pupils and their families to improve attendance.
NATASHA CORNELL - DESIGNATED SAFEGUARDING LEAD

Natasha has worked in education for over 20 years, previously working at a predominantly SEMH specialist setting, together with other additional needs such as ASD, ADHD and pupils who have suffered past emotional traumas. She also worked closely with pupils in care and managed transitions for new pupils.

Natasha prides myself on being very down to earth and treating pupils as individuals which includes letting them get to know her at their own pace and building a strong relationship based on this.

Natasha is very excited to be part of Woodlands Academy alongside a new dynamic Senior Leadership Team and the hugely talented staff group working directly with our pupils. She wants to ensure the school understands how important pupil voices are together with parents and carers views.
LAURA TURNER - DEPUTY HEADTEACHER

Laura began her teaching career as a teacher of P.E. in Secondary Mainstream education. Three years later, Laura completed a Master’s Degree in Special Educational Needs and began working across alternative provisions. Laura has held many roles across her career, from teacher through to Deputy Head of School/SENDCo. Laura also worked as an interim Head of School/DSL at an SEMH school, driving improvement in behaviour and attitudes, and quality of teaching and learning.

Laura is excited to join the Woodlands Senior Leadership Team as Deputy Headteacher and feels the school is on an exciting journey. She believes the SLT team are driven to ensure the quality of education is personalised and meets the needs of all pupils to ensure effective progress is paramount.
STEWART BANKS – DESIGNATED TEACHER FOR LOOKED AFTER CHILDREN

Stewart has taught and worked within residential and educational settings with pupils with SEMH now for over 15 years. Stewart feels that his teaching experience, along with previous leadership positions held will support him now in his role as Designated Teacher for LAC and member of the leadership team at Woodlands.

Stewart is passionate about improving the school experience for some of our most vulnerable pupils.
ALAN FORWOOD - BEHAVIOUR & PASTORAL LEAD

Alan has 15years experience in SEMH having been a Middle Leader and Head of PE at his previous setting. Alan is really enjoying working with the team at Woodlands in his position as Behaviour & Pastoral Lead, he says being involved with all the pupils across the school (not just in one class) has allowed him to build relationships very quickly with the pupils at Woodlands.
PHILIP BUCKLE - HEALTH & SAFETY LEAD

Since starting teaching in 2002, Phil says his learning journey has not stopped and he has found himself working as a lecturer, teaching a range of subjects and a Curriculum Manager, predominantly in Special Education Needs.

Phil’s main specialism is Land-Based Studies and he has recently delved into the creative realms of Design Technology.

Alongside his teaching roles, Phil says he feels privileged to work with the Senior Leadership Team in steering the school forward, striving to raise aspirational targets, support and guide pupils in meeting their potential and preparing them for the future.
DAVID VINTER - KS3 LEAD

David began his teaching career in primary schools before moving 5 years ago to teach exclusively in SEMH settings.

He completed his SENDCO training in July 2021 and uses these skills and experience to lead and support the Key Stage 3 nurture groups’ provision at Woodlands.

David feels that with the right support pupils can achieve their very best and become confident, happy adults. David is proud to join the Senior Leadership Team and looks forward to the new challenges ahead.
